The Impossibookshelf: 4D Printing!?

The Impossibookshelf: 4D Printing!? | 4D Printing | Scoop.it

Last week I saw this video on CNN about 4D printing. I am still so excited about 3D printing, but when I saw what 4D printing was all about, 3D printing seems so 5 minutes ago.

Not really though. If you are ever within earshot of my voice, then you know that I talk about 3D printing all the time. Libraries are starting to incorporate makerspaces where people can come to make and design things.

hese spaces can include computers and software to create music, videos, or art. I believe that ideas of what a makerspace can be are endless.

Sometimes libraries will purchase a 3D printer which prints real-world static objects that come from models designed on the computer. What can you print? ANYTHING. Are you a Doctor Who fan? Check out this article about Dalhousie University Library's 3D printer. They printed a TARDIS!

Move Aside 3D Printing, 4D Printing is Taking Shape

Never fear the unknown. A trio of university researchers from Harvard, the University of Illinois and the University of Pittsburgh, received a grant worth $855,000 from the U.S. Army to advance 3D printing to another dimension. The group plans to develop 4D materials that can exhibit changes that occur over time. For example, an outfit printed for a soldier could change to a camouflage print or adjust to be resistant to shrapnel.
